J. Merritt White, III
Biography
Though Merritt is now synonymous with the community of Concord in the county of Cabarrus, his journey into legal practice here began with an initial move from Jacksonville, Florida. His father’s desire to once become a lawyer himself prompted Merritt’s desire to turn from a pursuit in ministry and instead help others through legal counsel. Merritt notes that the most rewarding part of his career has been helping people through those rough times that are often exacerbated by legal dealings. It’s this desire to help others that has continued to keep Merritt a staple in the Cabarrus area, and garnered his reputation for understanding his clients’ needs in depth.
Though Merritt is a partner in the firm of Hartsell & Williams, P.A, he personally has 29 years of trial experience concentrating in Cabarrus, Rowan, Stanly, and Mecklenburg counties. This diversity gives him a unique platform and wide range of legal scope. He has successfully handled and tried cases involving family law, domestic law, personal injury, and all civil litigation, including contract, corporate, real estate, and will contest.
His education at Campbell Law School reiterated the emphasis, and Merritt’s belief, that developing lawyers should possess moral conviction, social compassion and professional competence for their career in law. Merritt views the practice of law as a calling to serve others and create a more just society—that conviction was nurtured throughout his education and continues to be nurtured by the areas of his practice.
“One of the best parts about being an attorney is getting to meet people from all walks of life.”
Merritt’s desire to move to Concord centered around his belief that it would be a great place to raise his family. Family is a major component of Merrit’s motivation to work hard for Hartsell and Williams and the clients with whom he comes into contact. When asked what gives him inspiration each day he will quickly respond “my wife”.
In his spare time, Merritt enjoys spending time with his family, reading and traveling.
In Merritt's own words:
You’re known throughout the community, but what are people often surprised to find out about you when they meet you?
“I am not as gruff as my exterior may seem…”
What has a client said to you that truly made you happy to be in your profession?
“I once had a client say ‘You are the only person to ever speak in my defense’.”
